The International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) is welcoming students to apply for internship positions between August 2020 and April 2021 for a duration of three to six months. Students of economics, environmental management, public policy, climate policy, and international relations with an excellent academic track record are encouraged to apply.

Interns with ICAP will join a young, dynamic team and gain firsthand experience in the daily work of an international organization. The position offers the opportunity to develop insight into international and national climate policy processes, play an active role in communicating climate policy developments to diverse target groups, and build expertise on a wide range of topic related to emissions trading and carbon pricing. Along with supporting ICAP activities, the position may involve working on consultancy projects as part of adelphi, the hosting partner of ICAP.

The selected candidate will support the team on:

  • research and coordination to carry out ICAP’s technical dialogue and knowledge sharing work, such as the annual flagship publication “Status Report on Emissions Trading Worldwide”, studies on ETS design and implementation, and tools such as the Allowance Price Explorer
  • ICAP’s capacity-building activities, such as in-country workshops
  • policy analysis and evaluation of political processes concerning emissions trading
  • the conceptualization, organization, and execution of ICAP events
  • governance processes within ICAP.

Candidates with sufficient German language skills will furthermore participate in the German Environment Ministry’s weekly staff meetings and events of the division responsible for the EU ETS.

We are looking for excelling master students who specialize in one of the fields mentioned above; have previous experience in the climate policy field, ideally with a basic understanding of emissions trading; have excellent command of written and spoken English; and demonstrate excellent drafting and communicating skills. Further language skills (German, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian) are a plus. Applications from bachelor students with a minimum of five successfully completed semesters will also be considered.

Candidates are welcome to submit their application (CV, motivation letter indicating availability, and degree transcripts) to secretariataticapcarbonaction [dot] com (secretariat[at]icapcarbonaction[dot]com) before 16 March 2020. The internship is carried out at the ICAP office in Berlin for a period of three to six months and should be mandatory as part of the applicant’s degree. Interns receive a monthly remuneration.

ICAP is a multilateral network of public authorities and national governments that have implemented an ETS, are actively pursuing an ETS, or are considering one. ICAP’s mission is to share best practices and experiences regarding the design and implementation of ETSs around the world. The ICAP Secretariat is hosted by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). The policy consultancy adelphi is responsible for project management and staffing. The Secretariat’s work includes the coordination and analytical support of the ICAP process, especially in moderating the technical dialog among the member jurisdictions, as well as capacity building and knowledge sharing on emissions trading.
