ICAP and IETA co-hosted a High-Level Carbon Pricing Dialogue in New York City on 24 September 2014, the day after the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit.

100 Heads of States and Governments, and over 800 business, civil society and local leaders, gathered in New York City on 23 September 2014 for the UN Climate Summit. The goal was to mobilize climate change action and ambition – particularly en route to COP21 in Paris (December 2015). The broad mobilization surrounding the Summit shows that the conversation has shifted.

ICAP and IETA joined forces to showcase ambitious climate action through pricing carbon and harnessing the power of markets. About 150 government and corporate leaders came together to discuss lessons learned from and prospects for carbon pricing as a key policy instrument in tackling climate change. Participants recognized the mosaic of carbon policy instruments operating and in development worldwide, its associated benefits and challenges. Their voices were in tune. Putting a price on carbon – via emissions trading or carbon taxes – is a necessary means to achieve an ambitious, yet needed end: significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the global scale and move to low-carbon economies.

Speakers included:
German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks

Korean Environment Minister Yoon Seong-kyu

Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Tine Sundtoft

Special Representative of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference Laurence Tubiana
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres

World Bank Vice President Rachel Kyte

New-Zealand Climate Change Ambassador Jo Tyndall
as well as the Environment Ministers of Québec, New York State, Massachusetts, representatives of California and the European Commission, and Chairmen/CEOs of major companies
